Are you
ready
to care for yourself, your family, and your neighborhood in case of an emergency
or overwhelming disaster?
CERT
training will give you the skills needed to reduce risk in your community. The
hands-on-training is interactive, ongoing and will make our community, our
County, safer; stronger, and better prepared.
No matter
where you live, no matter who you are, we all have a role in hometown
preparedness.
What role
will you play?
What about
maintaining skills?
We will
have continuation training, events & exercises that will incorporate the CERT
volunteers, as well as strengthen their knowledge and skill base.
How
much time is involved?
The
basic initial training is approximately 20 hours and is spread out over several
weeks. The continuation training and exercises vary.
Will
we be able to carry weapons or get to drive emergency vehicles?
The
safety of our volunteers is paramount so we will never utilize volunteers for
activities that are considered high-risk, such as carrying weapons or operating
emergency vehicles.
Are
there any age limits?
While we don’t have age limits, we are looking for mature, responsible
volunteers.
What about
physical ability?
There is no physical test and the tasks our volunteers perform are not
physically demanding. Those that are not as physically fit can assist with
administrative and other responsibilities.
Who
can take the training?
Almost anyone can take the initial training; however, a background check will be
required. The volunteers for the CERT program will be selected based on training
results, interviews, the results of the background checks and areas of need.
The (CERT)
Community Emergency Response Team program is
a community-based training program sponsored by the Lapeer County Office of
Emergency Management. It is designed to increase our communities' capacity to
respond to emergency situations, in coordination with professional responders,
such as the fire and police departments. Whether it is severe weather or other
emergency situations, through the training they receive, CERT members learn how
to prepare themselves and their families to weather the storm. It also provides
team members with the tools to help their neighbors and community safely and
effectively.
Community Emergency Response Team
A Community
Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a citizens group that is organized and
receives special training that enhances their ability to prepare for, respond
to, recover from and mitigate against a major emergency or disaster situation.
The CERT is organized under the Lapeer County Emergency Management Office with
instructional and operational support provided various public safety agencies.
Any citizen can sign up to attend the courses, which are held 1 night per week
for 7 weeks (at a location that is agreed upon by the students and instructors).
During the course citizens will be trained by Emergency Management, Fire-Rescue,
and Communications personnel to learn disaster preparedness, fire suppression,
medical operations, light search & rescue, psychology, and team organization.
When a major emergency overwhelms normally available resources, response delays
of hours or even days may occur; someone with "basic skills training" should be
able to immediately assist those in distress. CERT recognizes that a
well-prepared community is a vital resource to professionals.
We are committed to making this program widespread throughout Lapeer County and
look forward to our team training courses. If you would like to join the CERT
program as an individual or as a group, please contact (CERT coordinator) at
810-667-0242

IS 317 Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams
"Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams", IS 317, is an on-line,
independent study course that can serve as either an introduction to those
wanting to join a Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) or as a refresher
to current team members. It has six modules with topics that include an
Introduction to CERT, Fire Safety, Hazardous Material and Terrorist Incidents,
Disaster Medical Operations, and Search and Rescue. It takes between six and
eight hours to take the course. Those successfully finishing it will receive a
certification of completion from the Independent Study Office.
The IS 317 can be taken by anyone interested in CERT. However, to become a CERT
volunteer, one must complete the classroom training offered by the Lapeer County
Citizen Corps program. Contact our CERT coordinator's office at 810-667-0242 to
find out the education and training opportunities available to you. Let this
person know about your interest in taking CERT training.
